1000 Hours Project

We’re donating 1000 hours to help stop child abuse

The people working at DraftFCB feel very strongly about the disturbing levels of child abuse in New Zealand. But strong feelings alone don’t create change, so we’ve decided to do something. It’s a very big and complex problem, and we know that one advertising agency won’t achieve much on its own. But if we can give a boost to an existing, dedicated, long-term organisation, and help that organisation act as an inspiring example to others, then we believe we can make a difference. That’s why we’re donating 1000 hours of our communications expertise to the organisation (or organisations) that can best show us how they can use it to help protect New Zealand’s children.

How we can help

DraftFCB are one of New Zealand’s largest full-service advertising agencies. ‘Full-service’ means we have the in-house capability to help you develop all types of communications ranging from print, radio, outdoor and TV to online, direct marketing, PR, events and stake-holder engagement – or any combination of the above. We also have media experts that can provide advice on where and how to place those communications to reach your audience as efficiently and effectively as possible.

There are many ways an organisation dedicated to stopping child abuse could use our services. You might need help raising awareness and attracting partners, volunteers or donations. Or keeping in touch with the supporters you already have. You might need to develop or evolve a website that serves as an information resource. Or you might want a campaign to directly influence public behaviour. The approach taken will depend entirely on the nature of your organisation and what you’re trying to achieve. Whatever the situation, our strategists can work with you to help you focus your approach and use our 1000 hours to best effect.

What we’re looking for

We want to help an organisation that’s already doing something about child abuse. It may not be the primary aim of your organisation, but it will be a very real result of your activities. You will have people with the necessary skills and motivations. You will be organised and in it for the long-haul. And you will be very clear about your objectives, with at least a general idea as to how our 1000 hours might help you achieve them.

Your organisation doesn’t have to be large. And you don’t have to be tackling the entire problem. In fact we’d prefer to work with an organisation that’s very focused with its efforts. So you might be aiming to help just one community. Or you might be focused on one factor or cause. But you must be able to make a difference.

How to apply

Simply fill out the form here and click on ‘submit’ when you’ve finished.

Please include any website addresses, references or referees that might help us better appreciate your organisation‘s expertise and approach.

The selection process

A team of four senior DraftFCB personnel will review all applications. A short list, probably three or four organisations, will then be invited to an interview. This may be in person or via video conference, depending on the applicant’s location. We are grateful for the help of guest expert Dr Russell Wills* who will also review the finalists, attend the interviews and help us make our final decision.
After the interviews, if our criteria have been met, we will invite one organisation, or possibly a partnership of more than one, to be the recipient of our 1000 hours donation.

*Dr Russell Wills has been New Zealand’s Children’s Commissioner since July 2011 and continues to work part time as a paediatrician in Hastings. He has a Master of Public Health degree and his clinical interests are in general paediatrics, child protection and children with severe behaviour disturbance. He sees many children suffering from the effects of abuse and neglect, and has contributed to national guidelines and projects on family violence, child abuse and medical aspects of children in Child, Youth and Family care.

Timing

  • Applications close Friday 30th August.
  • Interviews will take place week commencing Monday 23rd September.
  • The successful applicant(s) will be notified week commencing Monday 7th October.
  • The timing for the work, i.e. the start and end points for the ‘1000 hours’, will depend entirely on the nature of the organisation, its activities, and the approach we develop.
